Blackberry Storm or Droid?
My mind keeps going in circles. I have a Blackberry Storm and I absolutely LOVE it! I do wish it had a slide out or flip keyboard cuz typing on a virtual keyboard is tricky and I find myself backspacing a lot to fix typos caused by pudgy fingers. I also love flip phones. I was excited to learn that RIM is working on a slide out keyboard for Storm3 rumored to be released the end of this year! But the more I hear about the Android the more my mind wanders over to Droid world.
I love the big screen and the mini-computer capability that having a Storm gives me and would want that in whatever phone I go with. The Android seems to have all of what I want in a phone *and* the flip keyboard which intrigues me. They’re heavy little buggers though and I do like the shape of the Storm better. We’re on Verizon and the iPhone isn’t available (as yet anyway) and I don’t know if I’d go that route or not. Switching cell providers isn’t an option. We tried that last year and the results were disastrous and costly to switch back to Verizon. With all the hullabaloo over the iPhone’s antenna issues I think I’ll pass. I really don’t need a third phone option buzzing in my brain anyway, that would only confuse the issue even more.
I don’t have to decide this right away, our contract runs almost another year but yet I can’t seem to stop thinking about this. Most computer-geeks suffer from New Toy Lust and so I’m trying hard to control myself and *not* take on the expense of an early renewal. Let’s face it, upgrading your phone is expensive when you use a Smartphone and I’m trying hard to stick with the New Every Two instead of an early upgrade. If I can hold off, we just *might* be able to get the new carpet we so desperately need.
I see the Droid HTC now comes in white which looks very cool, but all I can think of is how grey it might look a few months down the road. But there’s always a variety of cover color options which you can swap out as often as you like with any Smartphone.
Would be super if I could test drive an Android for awhile and really put it to the test but unfortunately that isn’t an option as far as I know. I would love to hear from folks who use a Droid and particularly those that have or have also used a Blackberry Storm. Those that have experience with both would be able to give valuable input!

Phandroid.com is among the most interesting, good forums, too.
After much research and soul searching it seems my decision is made and I can finally let my brain move onto something else. For today I’m sticking with Blackberry. The new Blackberry Torch was released to AT&T on Friday (yes, Friday the 13th!) and I’m in definitely phone-love ♥ with it! I can’t wait until whatever they’re releasing to Verizon is available! The deciding factor was pretty much to “do what felt right in my heart.” I finally figured out that it seemed the major and perhaps only reason I was even considering moving to a Droid is that it’s supposedly so much faster than Blackberry. I’m not out to break any speed records, so it just seems stupid to change over to a phone that will give me more speed (when I don’t need more speed anyway) just because it’s faster while sacrificing so much of what I love about my Blackberry Storm … like how it looks for example. A co-worker gave me the opportunity to play with her Droid a little. The Droid does seem to work really slick and it is faster than my Blackberry. But … when I pay the kind of money one pays for a smartphone, I feel I have every right to love the way it looks or at the very least like it’s looks alot and I so do love the look of my Blackberry Storm. So, unless Droid puts out a Blackberry Storm look-alike I don’t foresee me jumping ship to Droid anywhere in the near future.
Love my Motorola Droid – first smartphone I purchased and it is what I’m using right now to type this message. A new version is rumored to be coming out at end of year. I’ve seen the keyboardless Droid X and the HTC Incredible, but I prefer having the slideout keyboard, and I like the substantial (ie metal, not plastic) feel of the Droid. Apps are plentiful, and most I use are free.
Blackberry has its place in the business world, and if you use a BES (blackberry enterprise server), it is the best solution security-wise for corporate use. The security on the Androids to date has been lacking, and some find it a little unsettling how much info Google has the ability to gather.
I don’t use my Android for business use… more of an information and news retrieval device (I follow the local and national newspapers on twitter and use their links to read news). A standard night at my house might have my husband say something like “Who was the actor that starred in (some movie)?” And me saying “Hang on a sec, I’ll look that up in IMDB on my phone… it’s (insert name here)”.
Thanks so much, Brett. I wasn’t aware of security issues so this is good information. It sounds like I use mine more like you use yours, pretty casual stuff and no corporate bizdom requiring BES. I think a Droid may also be also cheaper than a Blackberry which in my opinion is directly related to holding a status symbol in your hand which is not why I got mine. Good to know there are many free apps, there are for Blackberry, too and a bazillion low cost which I’ve managed to accumulate my share of. I will have to look for some forum boards for the Android. Do you have any favorite Droid haunts?
